Here at the Old Vicarage School we want our girls to be curious about the world around them, right from their first moments in Little Vic.
Lessons are taught by the girls’ class teachers as part of Understanding the World in the EYFS curriculum in Little Vic and Reception and as focused Science lessons in Lower School, Year 1 and Year 2. In Upper School Science lessons are taught by a specialist teacher in our dedicated science lab.
Active learning is encouraged through using practical equipment and by taking part in age appropriate experiments. Whether it involves using a magnifying glass to look at bugs and other insects up close, to designing and building a burglar alarm using electrical circuits, science is for everyone of any age in the school. Girls are encouraged to make use of their iPads to take photos, make presentations and films to enhance their learning. For example; filming the earth’s rotation round the sun using models and then presenting it to the class on the smart board helps consolidate a concept by giving ownership to the girls.
Girls are also given opportunities to see science in action through visiting presenters who bring exciting experiments to life. A popular visit for the younger children involves handling small mammals and insects.
